Samsung's F490 P720 handsets get outed - December 24, 2007

Filed under: Cellphones Although we came across Samsung's SGH-F490 during a recent FCC scavenger hunt, it, along with the previously announced P720 were recently spotted at an event in Ukraine. Unfortunately, most is lost in translation, but we can gather that the latter will rock dual SIM card slots, a 3-megapixel camera, a 320 x 240 resolution display and a price tag upwards of $500. As for the F490, you can expect a 5-megapixel camera, touchscreen display (presumably with tactile feedback...

Google CEO on the new workplace: Check out the broads! Eric Schmidt - December 19, 2007

The New York Times got tons of quotes but little information out of Google CEO Eric Schmidt for a piece on the company's competition with Microsoft. So what's a fancy blog like the Times to do Add to the empty verbiage by reprinting an equally gassy email from Schmidt on management. Here it is, helpfully boiled down to the almost nothing it was to begin with.Information overload. Consequences: A) No falsehood can last. Everything is checked as you say it. B) People expect an immediate answer. I.

Describe Your UI in One Sentence - December 19, 2007

You are going to hear me talk a lot about user interfaces and human computer interaction in 2008. It&39;s an area that I&39;m intensely interested in as I think the way we interact with computers 20 years from now will make our current UI HCI paradigms look as quaint as DOS and 3270 emulation mode looks today. One of my friends working in this area is Bruce Wyman, the director of technology at the Denver Art Museum. Bruce periodically writes a blog called DAM Technology and recently put up..

'Time' Person of the Year: Vladimir Putin - December 19, 2007

Time managing editor Rick Stengel just announced on Today that Russian president Vladimir Putin is the magazine's Person of the Year for 2007. I gotta say, I love this pick. It's news-driven, hyper-relevant and concrete rather than mushy and consumer-driven, like last year's "You," or heart-warming, like 2005's "The Good Samaritans." And it dusts off the long-disused tradition of recognizing the year's biggest bad guy as its top newsmaker. Not since 1979 has a dictator been POY. Sorry, Al...

A Bear on Bonuses - December 19, 2007

What Wall Street makes matters to the New York economy, to the arts, and, especially, to philanthropy. This bonus season is shaping up as one of extremes, and that will bring a mixed bag to the beneficiaries of Wall Street's largesse. Goldman Sachs said on Tuesday that it showered $20.2 billion in compensation and bonuses this year, up 23 percent from 2006. That amounts to an average of $661,500 per employee, but its top executives are expected to receive tens of millions of dollars in...

Does Twitter do enough - December 19, 2007

Evan Williams, the Blogger guy and Twitter co-founder, gave a talk at LeWeb3 about keeping software small, and how sometimes you can create a product by removing features from an existing product. He showed how Twitter is less than Blogger, no permalinks, titles, comments, templates, etc. It's almost nothing compared to Blogger, but we're using it and liking it. It's not a new story. When I was coming of age in computer science, the newest computers were minicomputers. They were called that...
