There must be a word for this... (2008.07.01 16:06) - July 1, 2008

I've experienced this far too often, and I know everyone else who has ever laid hands on a computer has experienced it. So there must be a word or acronym for it. Essentially, its the intersection of Murphy's Law and PEBKAC. E.g., I'm currently helping someone build some sw on Windows. He's a Linux hacker, and quickly gets frustrated by the Windows "everything has to be a GUI" imposition. Now, when I personally built this particular package, I had no problems. But I've been hacking Windows...

2008Q3 Call for Grant Proposals (2008.07.01 15:09) - July 1, 2008

The Perl Foundation is looking at giving some grants ranging from $500 to $3000 in August 2008.In the past, we've supported Adam Kennedy's PPI and Strawberry Perl, Nicholas Clark's work on Perl internals, Jouke Visser's pVoice, Chris Dolan on Perl::Critic and many others (just check http:www.perlfoundation.orggrants for more references).You don't have to have a large, complex, or lengthy project. You don't even have to be a Perl master or guru. If you have a good idea and the means and ability..

Where's the goal line (2008.07.01 12:41) - July 1, 2008

From a comment on rakudo.org:dstar said:   One thing I'm not clear on -- Rakudo is passing 1100 tests out of how many IE, where's the goal lineWell, the "goal line" is by definition a moving target. There's not a hard number we can cite -- even in Perl 5 the size of the test suite constantly changes as new features are added and new bugs are found. There will be a point at which we declare a particular set of tests as being the "official test suite" for Perl 6.0.0, but we're really not...

YAPC::NA 2008: My Photos (2008.07.01 8:33) - July 1, 2008

For those that might be interested, I've finally posted a load of my photos on my personal site. As you'll note from the text, I'm not as happy with the results as I could have been, so you'll have to forgive me for some of them. But there are a few good ones in there :) Looking forward to Chicago 2010 now :)

Autodia 2.08 uploaded to CPAN (2008.07.01 6:23) - July 1, 2008

Just uploaded 2.08 to CPAN - now skip lists work correctly for most input handlers, Java has been entirely removed (it hasn't worked for most of this decade), and author tests are excluded - also graphviz options now include concentrate for tidier output.

CPANTS Success (2008.07.01 6:21) - July 1, 2008

It's taken a bit longer than I hoped, but I have finally beaten the CPANTS game. From about an hour ago all of my CPAN modules score 100% and I'm therefore (along with a number of other people) top of the CPANTS league.Of course, they'll probably introduce some new measures soon and I'll have to start all over again.Now, given my awesome CPANTS score, who wants to come on one of my Perl courses

The most important code comment... (2008.07.01 5:08) - July 1, 2008

this code exists because ...I'm seeing code which only exists because the problem was misunderstood or maybe unclear at the outset. But, determining that this is why it exists in the current form (or at all) requires me to read all of it, decipher some convoluted conditionals (some of which are redundant), and speculate about whether some questionable parts are bugs or happy accidents which are required to function properly.Namely, this module (which will forever remain nameless because it no.
