Ventilation and Airflow in Buildings Methods for Diagnosis and Evaluation - (Found June 19, 2008 )

Energy efficiency in buildings requires, among other things, that ventilation be appropriately dimensioned: too much ventilation wastes energy, and insufficient ventilation leads to poor indoor air quality and low comfort. Studies have shown that ventilation systems seldom function according to their commissioned design. They have also shown that airflow measurement results are essential in improving a ventilation system. This handbook explains why ventilation in buildings should be measured...

Bluetooth gives spies a window into your life - (Found June 19, 2008 )

Cellphones with Bluetooth are more of a privacy threat than RFID chips, say researchers who used the system to track 10,000 people in one city. Bluetooth, a wireless link built into many cellphones, makes our movements trackable by anyone equipped with a PC and an appropriate receiver. Vassilis Kostakos at the University of Bath in the UK placed four Bluetooth receivers in the city's centre. Over four months, his team tracked 10,000 Bluetooth phones and was able to "capture and analyse...

Adapted aircon can track movement in the home - (Found June 19, 2008 )

Pressure detectors in air-conditioning units can track the movement of people through a building and could be used to save energy. An HVAC system circulates air throughout a house using a system of ducts. In an empty house, that circulation reaches a steady state and there is a constant airflow through the central filter. But the flow is disturbed if a human moves through the house, particularly if they open and close doors as they go. A research team found that they could detect these tiny...

Prize winning sensor - (Found June 19, 2008 )

ABB won an innovation award at an oil and gas industry conference for a wireless vibration sensor that could revolutionize the maintenance of electric motors. The device, called Wivib, has been developed for use on small motors. Analysis of data about the vibrations of a motor enables abnormalities in its performance to be identified at an early stage.

Explosive sensor - (Found June 19, 2008 )

Scientists at the University of Massachusetts have created complex molecules containing zinc for use in portable sensors that quickly and reliably detect the presence of plastic explosives. Sensors containing the zinc complexes are also the first devices that allow the user to identify which type of explosive is present, since each metal complex has a unique response to explosives and explosive mimics.
