Disabled Regina teen denied access to flight CANADA - July 4, 2008

After a travel nightmare that stranded her in Ottawa, a teenage quadriplegic finally boarded a flight home to Regina on Thursday night. But instead of the regular WestJet Airlines Ltd. flight she had planned to be on, 15-year-old Avery Ottenbreit was expected to arrive home early this morning on board an air ambulance after the airline decided her harness didn't meet flight regulations.

Spinal cord injured get help with sexual intimacy NEW ZEALAND - July 4, 2008

North Islanders with a spinal cord injury are getting help in expressing sexual intimacy thanks to an innovative new programme. The Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit and TASC (The Association for Spinal Concerns) have together helped four hundred patients learn new ways of expressing their sexuality.

New home gives disabled couple independence MONTANA - July 4, 2008

Pam and Lyle Whitmore lived for years in an old Bozeman trailer that had holes in the floor, lights that flickered on and off when doors closed, and mold in the ceiling and carpet. As a married couple with disabilities, the Whitmores also worried about people throwing things at their rented trailer and stealing their belongings. On Thursday, the Whitmores celebrated the purchase of their own home -- a beautiful, clean townhouse in the Chequamegon Village on West Babcock Street.

Hospital halts therapy program CALIFORNIA - July 4, 2008

A state-funded program that helps the physically disabled will shut down after budget reductions from the California Department of Rehabilitation. Project Threshold, part of the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, partnered occupational and physical therapists with disabled individuals to evaluate their home, work and school conditions and provide assistive technology.

Disabled man 'failed' by council UK - July 4, 2008

A disabled man suffered "unnecessary indignity and inconvenience" because of failures at Sheffield City Council, an ombudsman's report has said. The council failed to adapt the man's home to meet his needs and as a result he spent up to 14 weeks without access to washing facilities or a toilet.

Clinician-scientists from NewYork-Presbyterian HospitalWeill Cornell Medical Center are suggesting an immediate and important change to guidelines used in the care of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The researchers say that following TBI, patients should be given nutritional supplementation through a gastric feeding tube as soon as possible, which they say can improve their chances of survival by as much as four-fold.
