Why Xbox Live gaming should be free for all - August 19, 2008

Over the weekend, I spent some time playing online. I did so on Xbox Live and through games on both my PS3 and Wii. All the while, I was thinking about the one simple fact that kept sticking out in my head: for now at least, I can play online with my Wii and Playstation 3 and the experience is basically the same. And considering Microsoft keeps losing ground to both Sony and Nintendo, why not find a new way to offer a more compelling alternative out of the company's most popular service

Dell's Eee-killer to ship with Ubuntu preinstalled - August 19, 2008

Dell's much-anticipated subnotebook product, which could be available to consumers by the end of the week, will be offered with Ubuntu 8.04 preinstalled. The little laptop is called the Inspiron 910 and it could displace the venerable Asus Eee PC as the dominant Linux-based notebook.

Channel 9: N-State Chaos and Windows Performance - August 19, 2008

Gabriel Aul is a 16 year Microsoft veteran who has always had his hand in the chaotic world of system performance and reliability, from technical product support and testing to being a leader on the Windows performance team. Although I'm not a fan of Itzik Ben Gan's sudoko-in-sql puzzles and logic games of that nature, I figured that's what Steve was going to talk about. (Personally, I like my games with BIG EXPLOSIONS in 3D and.

Live Mesh expands into Canada, India, and Ireland - August 19, 2008

Soon after the release of a new version and expanded availability late last month, the Live Mesh team has once again added new countries to the official list of regions that can sign up directly to the service, which is still in a Tech Preview state. Users in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, and Ireland can sign up with a Windows Live ID to use Microsoft's syncing mediator for devices and data, without being placed on a wait list.

Bursting the Vista sales bubble - August 19, 2008

We figured that we'd find more than a few systems within our 3,000-plus-strong membership that had been "de-Vista-fied" -- either by the manufacturer or directly by the end customer. What we didn't expect was for nearly 35 percent of all current-model PCs (that is those that normally ship with Vista installed) in the repository to be running a different OS.
