Random thoughts on the manageability of complex software.

And The Winner of the AOP Wars is... - June 20, 2003

It's always bold to proclaim victory in a race that hasn't finished.  I once proclaimed early victory for the Hibernate project and the OJB folks wanted me lynched from the highest tree top!   Those were in the good 'ol days when thrashing open source projects weren't in vogue.  So drum roll please, the winner in the AOP wars is none other than ... AspectWerkz! Uncanny mastery of the subject matter, comprehensive functionality, impressive performance and most of...

Humans are Part of the Equation - June 18, 2003

Your life is the sum of the remainder of an unbalanced equation inherent to the programming of the Matrix. You are the eventuality of an anomoly which, despite my sincerest efforts I have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. snip The first matrix I designed was quite naturally perfect -- it was a work of art, flawless, sublime.  A triumph equaled only by its monumental failure. Words of wisdom from the architect in the movie...

Handy Link To "101 Reasons Why Java is Better..." - June 18, 2003

I've heard a few complaints from people having trouble finding the "101 list".  My apologies, the navigation through my blog is a bit cumbersome, however it's doable if you take advantage of the calendar to move back in time.  Anyway, for those who want to read "101 Reasons Why Java is Better than .NET", you can view the list in its entirety using this link http:www.freeroller.netpageceperez20030129catname=101%20List. A few things have changed since I finished the.

Open For Business! - June 16, 2003

The VC funded startup firm that I work for has dodged the bullet for several years now.  It's simply surprising that it has survived this long considering the hostile economic environment. Unfortunately, it's taken a fatal blow in the gut and is now on life support.    I am now actively seeking other opportunities.  I am available for both short term and long term consulting. My preference would be short term engagements, unless...

Standards: Doomed to Repeat Itself - June 16, 2003

George Santayana, a notable philosopher, coined the phrase, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."  William Grosso has put together a presentation about the history of the CORBA standard.  The presentation focues on the social and environmental factors that lead to the development of the CORBA standard.  There are a lot of parallels in CORBA's history and the emerging web services standards.  CORBA defined in 1989,...

How To Survive IT Deflation Part II - June 16, 2003

People are blogging about how and why they're going to survive IT deflation. Bruce Eckel writes http:mindview.netWebLoglog-0032 . He reasons that the statistics may be flawed. He points to a Department of Labor report showing top demand for computer related jobs. He sites personal experience of people who never have enough time. He reasons that most programmers who got laid off weren't really programmers. He reasons that jobs haven't really vanished, its just that work is just...

Why IT Doesn't Matter Anymore - June 15, 2003

A pretty provocative title don't you think  Well its the title of a recent Harvard Business Review article that explores this question.  So, you might think because I'm an IT guy, I'm going to slam the article.  Well surprise again!  The author may actually be right on serveral counts!  Read On. Actually, I'm not going to agree with everything the author said.  I'm just go to point out the insightful statements he made that hit the nail on the head.  First,...

The Unexpected Answer to Java's "Data" Standard - June 14, 2003

One of the gaping holes of the Java platform is the absence of a decent "Data Integration" API.  This statement may come as a complete surprise for the proponents of either EJB or JDO.  However, I'm going to tell you why both are inadequate and I'm going to tell you what the "powers that be" are really doing about it. EJB Entity Beans is a whoefully inadequate API for working with corporate data.  If you've got money to spend you can buy Rod Johnson's book that'll...

101 Ways to Make Money off Open Source - June 14, 2003

The list "101 Reasons Why Java is Better than .NET" was such a hit that even a vendor of .NET based software wrote that it was a source of "101 Product Ideas".  That motivated me to put together another list. Lately, I've been thinking of how to make money on open source Java.  I asked a supposed expert, but he didn't answer. So I decided to consult the Hive Mind by building a list. I hope to get a lot of creative contributions.  It's the "Lazy Web" in action!  So why.

How do you Pronounce "C" Anyway - June 14, 2003

How do you pronounce the "" symbol  It's traditionally "number", "pound" or "hash".  The word "sharp" refers to the musical symbol, which looks like the "hash" symbol but really isn't the same thing.  So, could it possibly be, that the intended pronunciation for "C" was "see hash"  Afterall, that would make perfect sense for two reasons.  First, the word "hash" is commonly used in programming as in "hash table".  Second, it's a slang word, just like "java",...
