What to do with your dog in Lake Tahoe - July 8, 2008

We spent the July 4th week at Lake Tahoe again this year, this time with our recently adopted dog. There are quite a few dog friendly places you can go. And the wildflowers are in their peak season this time of year. Here are the north lake spots we hit: North Tahoe Regional Park off National Avenue in Kings Beach has about 3-4 miles of wooded trails for hiking in addition to the tennis courts, ball fields and a disc golf course. They ask for $3 parking fee from non-residents (but you can...

How Do I Access Databases From My JRuby Rails Project - July 7, 2008

Over the last year, as I wrote and updated the Ruby tutorials, I end up with many different versions of the Rails applications, where each is based on a different version of JRuby. I often test with both Ruby and JRuby, and I try to test them using different database servers. Rather than follow a tutorial from scratch to get a working version for my current configuration, I wanted to learn how to easily take an application and change it to work with a different database configuration. For...

Sun xVM Family News - July 7, 2008

A couple of things came to my attention when I got back today - news items I'd missed during the three-day weekend. Evidently, my downtime window was longer than most people's. Clearly I need to virtualize myself. The first bit of news is that Paul Murphy at Zdnet did a cost-comparison between SunRays, which use Sun xVM VDI software, and a 'Wintel' setup. He found that SunRays provide cost savings both in the short term as well as the long term - not only do they require much less power and...

Flipping out by Joyce Solano - July 7, 2008

There are many reasons we resent our parents but I'm unhappy that mine did such a poor job documenting the many banal, insignificant but fond moments of my life. The manic panic green haired days, the flannels around the waist with black eyeliner summers and ooooh those horrid painful braces years. These coming of age, albeit embarrassing moments, are now long lost dots in the pages of Joyce Solano history. Perhaps this is why our community loves to document anything and everything around...

Half a trillion dollars, give or take a few billion - July 7, 2008

As I promised in my last blog entry, all the distractions are over ... I'm now officially married, so I've run out of excuses -- time to start blogging! Apparently, while I was off getting married, my boss, my boss' boss, and our Chief Technologist in SIO were furiously blogging away - describing service innovation, service science, and what our group in Sun is all about... so I thought I'd add to the chorus and throw in a bit of my perspective as well. Hopefully you've already read some..
