Not much of a buzz about 'Irish' honey - (Found July 8, 2008 )

HONEY in Ireland is not all it's cracked up to be, according to a new study, writes Aideen Sheehan. Tests have shown that a quarter of 'Irish' honey turned out to be from foreign shores while some contained antibiotic residues.

Movement restrictions for Nelson bee mite - (Found July 8, 2008 )

19 June 2006 Biosecurity New Zealand has put in place movement controls around the top of the South Island after beehives containing the varroa mite were found in Nelson last week. A national incursion response was launched on Friday after the mite was discovered during routine surveillance in two sites about 3km apart near Stoke.

Fear of mite's impact on business - (Found July 8, 2008 )

Jun 20, 2006 One of the two Nelson beekeepers who have had the varroa bee mite confirmed in their hives so far says it has the potential to put him out of business. The Biosecurity Authority has started intensive hive testing and imposed movement controls on beekeepers across the top of the South Island after confirmation of the bee parasite at two sites in the Stoke area late last week - the first in the South Island.

Beekeepers clinging to faint hope - (Found July 8, 2008 )

19 June 2006 By JUDE GILLIES Nelson beekeepers were on Monday clinging to hopes that the devastating varroa bee mite could still be eradicated, but some believe it is too late. The first tests results showing how widespread the mite is are expected from Christchurch this afternoon. An outbreak could cost the South Island economy $314 million over 35 years as it impacts on the pastoral sector pollinated by bees.

By Alison White Beekeepers have been battling the varroa mite, which "devastates" the bees. But it has become immune to pesticides used to control it. ALISON WHITE finds out more. FIGHTING the varroa mite has become routine for people who keep honey bees. The parasite was first discovered in England in 1992 and has since spread to infest colonies across the UK.

Varroa testing widens to West Coast - (Found July 8, 2008 )

Jun 27, 2006 Biosecurity New Zealand says it is going to start testing beehives on the South Island's West Coast, amidst fear the varroa bee mite may have spread further south. The parasite has been confirmed in 28 apiaries in the Nelson region, and in two apiaries 30 kilometres southwest of the city at Tapawera. The agency says 500 will now be tested in the Hokitika area. Varroa was first discovered in the North Island six years ago, resulting in the loss of about 25,000 hives.

Honey, it shrinks the pain - (Found July 8, 2008 )

Bees produce an impressive healing agent, but doctors are sceptical. 'There is no way I would let anyone treating me or my loved ones put anything except honey on our wounds," says Dr Shona Blair, a post-doctoral microbiology researcher at the University of Sydney. Blair, who has been researching the properties of honey for more than six years, says there have been a large number of worldwide clinical trials showing that honey applied to various wounds has impressive healing properties.

Varroa confirmed or suspected in nearly 20 Nelson hives - (Found July 8, 2008 )

22 June 2006 Nearly 20 hives around the Nelson area are either infected with varroa bee mite or are suspected of being infected, a biosecurity official said today. A national surveillance programme for varroa confirmed the presence of varroa at two sites at Stoke near Nelson on June 16, and a further eight infected sites were confirmed this week. "Another nine apiaries are suspected to be infected with the varroa," Biosecurity New Zealand senior policy analyst Paul Bolger said today.
