Promoting Pit Bulls - July 12, 2008

I was appalled to find a full-color photo on the July 7 front page of a woman lying in bed with three pit bulls "Saving Michael Vick's Dogs".

A Fail-Safe for Distracted Parents - July 12, 2008

I am sad both for the toddler who died after his father left him in a sport-utility vehicle and for the father Metro, July 10. But I understand how this could happen.

A Turnoff - July 12, 2008

Are the overly cute comments describing the two presidential candidates as "ready to kiss up" (Barack Obama) and "sock-sucking" (John McCain) in the captions accompanying Dana Milbank's July 9 column, "Latin Lovers," as well as similar references in the column, really respectful or really necessary

The Coughers and the Concertgoers - July 12, 2008

Richard Gould, author of the June 29 Close to Home piece on coughing at the Kennedy Center, may not be aware that until a few years ago, Halls stocked the Kennedy Center's boxes of cough drops for free. One fall the box disappeared from its spot near the entrance to the hall, and an usher told me the Kennedy Center could not afford to supply cough drops in lieu of the freebies from the maker.

Isn't Bush's Iraq Policy Vindicated - July 12, 2008

Now we know the truth about yellowcake in Iraq. On July 6, you reported (and buried in the Around the World column), "The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program -- a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium -- reached a Canadian port July 5, completing a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a long ship voyage. The removal of more than 600 tons of yellowcake, the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment, was a significant step...

History Revisited - July 12, 2008

In his July 4 op-ed, "The Founding Mudslingers," Edward J. Larson wrote that "negative campaigning is as much a part of our political tradition" as Independence Day fireworks. Yet by vilifying each other, the Founders set a terrible precedent. Rather than following their example, Americans should heed Thomas Jefferson's 1801 warning against "political intolerance": "Let us reflect that, having banished from our land that religious intolerance under which mankind so long bled and suffered, we...
