Stories from the current online edition of The Northern Light.

Call yourself an Alaskan Maybe you should look around - July 29, 2008

I recently visited my hot, sweltering hippie roots in Southern California, and I was easily reminded of why I left. Traffic, pollution, lifted trucks as far as the eye could see, those stupid stick-figure family stickers peppered across the back of a Hummer's window, and of course, the recently imposed cell-phone ban which occurred the day after I arrived.

UAA's Summer Secret - July 29, 2008

It's no secret that Alaska has weird summers, and this one's been weirder than most - arriving reluctantly to begin with, barely nudging the mercury above 60 F, and seldom letting the famous midnight sun show its face. No doubt allergy sufferers are glad to see July depart, with all its pollen and midsummer snow of cottonwood fluff thick enough to give anyone trouble.

Student senators need to remember who they serve - July 29, 2008

The point of an elected government is to have a singular individual appointed to represent the ideas and interests of a larger collective body. In recent months Alaskans have watched local politicians face charges of corruption and bribery. The individuals elected to serve the people forgot, and instead looked to serve themselves and not the interest of their constituents.

Since the Student Union's art gallery has begun it's summer shows the art gallery team members have been working tirelessly to make sure everything runs smoothly with the gallery. They have set up for shows and then diligently watched over the show room every time.

Fall Movie Preview - July 29, 2008

What A fall movie preview But "The Dark Knight" is already out and I've seen it seven times. I can die happy now! Stay your utility belts, readers. Sure, Christopher Nolan's masterpiece resulted in both critical acclaim and record-breaking box office numbers - not to mention the collective nerdgasm of every fanboy worldwide - but there are a few more films of note releasing this fall.

Rain not enough to dampen Wilco crowd - July 29, 2008

It's been a long, windy road to Alaska for Wilco. They've been through multiple line-up changes, record label fiascos, prescription drug bouts, and a show canceling case of the chicken pox but it didn't stop them from making it to Anchorage for Moose's Tooth's 12th Anniversary Party where the only plight to overcome was rain.

'Fleet Foxes' - July 29, 2008

Think Band of Horses if they secluded themselves to cabin deep in the woods. Think Grizzly Bear but less obscure, or how about the Beach Boys but instead of surfing or chasing girls they're climbing mountains and growing beards. Somewhere in there are Fleet Foxes.

Two versions of "The Odd Couple" come to Cyrano's - July 29, 2008

In 1965 Neil Simon wrote and produced perhaps his most successful play: The Odd Couple. It ran for 966 performances, won several Tony Awards including Best Play, and was also adapted into a movie as well as a long-lived television show. It is the perfect comedic set-up: a neat-freak hypochondriac becomes roommates with a slovenly friend after both of their recent divorces.
