Robert Treat: PostgreSQL Partitioning slides now on Slideshare - September 13, 2008

I think these use to be on the OmnitTI website, but must have gotten lost in the shuffle, so I've stuck them up on Slideshare for now. This version was given at pgcon 2007 (I think I have given it in a couple of other places as well, but should be mostly them same), so it's an oldie, but, hopefully a goodie as well. Enjoy! Hubert Lubaczewski: Waiting for 8.4 - pgbench with timed execution - September 13, 2008

Takahiro Itagaki wrote, and Tom Lane committed nice patch, which I personally find really helpful: Add a duration option to pgbench, so that test length can be specified in seconds instead of by number of transactions to run. Takahiro Itagaki You might wonder what&8217;s so great nice about it. Well, during my years as dba I&8217;ve ...

Bruce Momjian: Event Attendance Cancellations - September 11, 2008

I have just informed event organizers that I cannot attend the Brazilian PostgreSQL Conference in late September. My father-in-law, who has lived with me since I got married in 1989, is terminally ill and I must help my family care for him. EnterpriseDB has been very supportive of my need for personal time. Selena Deckelmann: Filesystem IO at the Linux Plumbers Conference - September 10, 2008

graph from software raid, RAID10, no partition table, ext3, read-write load If you haven&8217;t heard, the Linux Plumbers Conference is happening September 17-19, 2008 in Portland, OR. It&8217;s a gathering designed to attract Linux developers - kernel hackers, tool developers and problem solvers. A few of us that met through the Portland PostgreSQL User Group (PDXPUG) pitched an idea for a talk on filesystem performance. We wanted to examine performance conventional wisdom and put it to the..

Hubert Lubaczewski: Waiting for 8.4 - ordered data loading in pg_dump - September 8, 2008

Great (and admittedly long overdue) patch by Tom Lane: Make pg_dump --data-only try to order the table dumps so that foreign keys' referenced tables are dumped before the referencing tables. This avoids failures when the data is loaded with the FK constraints already active. If no such ordering is possible because of circular or self-referential constraints, print a NOTICE ...
