RHQ: decomposing plugins - September 15, 2008

I've been talking a lot lately about how to write plugins for RHQ JBossON. When you try to manage larger systems like the JBoss Application Server with all its subsystems like Cache, Transactions, JBossWeb etc. your plugin might get relatively large to support all this.In this posting I will show you how to decompose a large(r) plugin into smaller ones that all together allow you to manage the large(r) system. This decomposition not only allows you to more easily distribute the development...

Seam Exam (beta) JavaBlackBelt - September 13, 2008

Together with Matthias Merz we created Seam - Basic Exam at JavaBlackBelt. It verifies general understanding of the Seam 2.0 concepts, required to implement a simple Seam application. The exam is now in the beta stage, which means it is available publicly and you can take the (beta) exam, which does not count for your belt progress. It will be released as soon as we collect enough stable questions in each category. Like all exams available at JavaBlackBelt, it is free. You are welcome to...

Mozilla readies "Private Browsing" - September 13, 2008

Mozilla Firefox 3.1 (which will go beta this month) will have a "Private Browsing" mode (aka P0rn Mode in the informal circles). I guess the privacy advocates will be a little more happy about this move from Mozilla (or may be not considering all the other browsers - safari, chrome, IE etc have adopted a roadmap for this). But lets ask the following questions about the need for Private Browsing:a) What is it useful for- watch prohibited stuff at your cube (Remember your visits are logged...

Securing Open Source - September 13, 2008

The dust has not yet settled on the recent discussion in the media on the security worthiness of Open Source Software. In continuation of my assertion that Open Source software can be as secure as one intends to be, I will be making a presentation titled "Securing Open Source" at the DHS Software Assurance Forum at NIST in October. The DHS National Cyber Security Division is the main sponsor of this forum. What will my presentation talk about Well, once it is ready I will post it here. In the..

Rule Engines and Performance Misconceptions - September 12, 2008

I'm starting to see a misconception between users on rule engine performance. They seem to struggle on why you can hand craft some java code and get better performance than a rule engine, and then wonder what the value of a rule engine is. For most veterans this is obvious, it's always possible for an experience developer to write faster code if you write a custom algorithm with all the correct data structures and indexes, some times order of magnitudes, as you know exactly which bits.

JBoss Tools at JAOO - September 12, 2008

I will be talking about JBoss Tools and Developer Studio at JAOO in Aarhus, Denmark 28th September. You should also be able to catch me hanging out at the JBossRed Hat booth Monday to Wednesday. Embedded Image I've attended JAOO a handful times in the past (early 2000's) and even though I have visited many conferences since then, JAOO still stands as one of the best developer conferences I have been to. The JAOO party is even almost as good as the JBoss World party. I'll be looking...

Hibernate Core Modules (3.3) - September 12, 2008

Quite a few folks have asked about the new Hibernate Core modules introduced with the 3.3 release: what each is for, when to use which, etc. I wanted to take a bit to describe what each of the main modules is for and whenhow you would use certain combinations. (These modules also define maven artifacts; all Hibernate Core artifacts use org.hibernate groupId). The modules hibernate-core - defines the basic functionality of Hibernate. It is expected that this module will be split up...
