'Failings' in Omagh fire deaths - (Found July 2, 2008 )

There were "failings on the part of the health and social services" in the case of a family who died in a house fire in Omagh, the health minister has said. Michael McGimpsey was speaking after an independent report said the authorities involved with the family could not have known what was about to happen. Full Story

Turkey, Iraq discuss border industrial zone - (Found July 2, 2008 )

Turkey has proposed establishing a joint industrial zone with Iraq in the border town of Ovaky, a province in the country's southeastern Anatolian region, State Minister Krsat Tzmen told reporters yesterday. It's a project to be developed. The details will be discussed. Both parties will benefit from this project Tzmen said on his return from Baghdad, where he had meetings over the weekend in preparation for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit this week. Russias Lavrov visiting Ankara to discuss array of collaborative activities - (Found July 2, 2008 )

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to arrive in Turkey today for an official two-day visit at the invitation of his Turkish counterpart, Foreign Minister Ali Babacan. Lavrov will discuss Russian-Turkish cooperation within the context of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), as well as international issues in other Black Sea formats, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said yesterday in Moscow. U.S. Lawmakers Question Kazakhstan's Fitness To Chair OSCE - (Found July 2, 2008 )

A U.S. congressional delegation visiting Kazakhstan called on the country to speed up democratic reforms ahead of assuming the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 2010. The delegation, in Astana for the OSCEs annual Parliamentary Assembly session, said Kazakhstan has not kept its promise to push through democratic reforms as a precondition for taking over the chairmanship of Europes leading human rights organization. REPORT HIGHLIGHTS A DEMOCRATIZATION DECLINE IN THE SOUTH CAUCASUS - (Found July 2, 2008 )

States in the South Caucasus are following a trend in the former Soviet Union, under which abundant energy wealth is helping to grease the wheels of a decline in democratic values, according to an annual report prepared by the democratization watchdog group Freedom House. Abkhazia blames Georgia for explosions - (Found July 2, 2008 )

Officials of the breakaway region of Abkhazia said Monday that it would seal itself off from Georgian-controlled territory after they blamed Georgia for a series of explosions on its territory. An official in the Georgian government denied it was involved in the explosions - the latest of which wounded a Russian vacationer Monday - and said Abkhazia's allegations were "politically motivated." Georgia says breakaway Abkhazia is now under Russian control - (Found July 2, 2008 )

Georgia's foreign minister said Tuesday that the effective control Russia has assumed over the breakaway province of Abkhazia is unacceptable. Abkhazia, the focus of an ongoing dispute between Russia and Georgia, closed its border with the rest of Georgia earlier on Tuesday. French army chief resigns after 17 injured at show - (Found July 2, 2008 )

France's army chief resigned Tuesday following a weekend military show in which 17 people were shot and wounded when real bullets were used instead of blanks. The country's defense minister suspended the use of blank munitions at public military shows. President Nicolas Sarkozy accepted Gen. Bruno Cuche's resignation, Sarkozy's office said Tuesday. Ministers face new 10p tax fight - (Found July 2, 2008 )
