Are We There Yet?Meg and Lisa drive through states sane people fly over, packing more consumer electronics than a small Best Buy.Peru is way too frickin' long- December 20, 2005 Okay, so I have all the actual writing done--it's all editing from here. The problem is, though, that I have 106 pages. Peru is way out of control, about twice as long as I expected, and about 4 times as long as I wanted. I hopesuspect I have a lot of cutting ahead of me in the next couple of days while I tighten up the chapter, so I hope this is as huge as it EVER gets: <P> Peru: pages, 106 (+12); words, 27,606 (+3,641) Document: pages: 289; words, 79,672.http://www.cadence90.com/blogs/treklog.html/2005_12_18_treklog_archive.html#11351103466444... Allllmooooost...- December 19, 2005 I've been writing each piece in three stages: First, I read a lot of books and flag passages that I think might be useful. Then, I stick stuff in the document: quote the passages that do turn out to be useful, my thoughts and insights while I'm going along, ideas, etc. I have a sort of loose framework set up in the document, so I slug bits and pieces into the rough area of the chapter where they should end up. Next, I go through the whole thing and make it a coherent document instead of a...http://www.cadence90.com/blogs/treklog.html/2005_12_18_treklog_archive.html#11350346448934... Closing in on Peru- December 16, 2005 I'm hoping to finish the actual writing and quoting and stuff tomorrow, then edit over the weekend, and Roberto's your tio. <P> Today, I'm especially struck by the Velasco regime's good intentions but general ineptitude. They wanted to help poor people, but they really didn't understand them in a day-to-day way. They had a lot of lofty, grand theories about how the country should be socioeconomically, but not a lot of concrete ideas how to get there. It reminds me of a business that..http://www.cadence90.com/blogs/treklog.html/2005_12_11_treklog_archive.html#11347012291506... Do I know that guerilla- December 14, 2005 When we read, we all fill in pictures in our minds of what's going on, right We sometimes fill in the faces of characters with the likenesses of those who are familiar to us. As I have been reading about the Shining Path in Peru, I can't help but notice that I assigned the likeness of Edith Lagos, guerilla and romantic hero, to a former student of mine. I picture Nelly in jungle-worn fatigues, Kalishnikov poised, maybe with half her weight in dynamite strapped to her back. Nelly doesn't...http://www.cadence90.com/blogs/treklog.html/2005_12_11_treklog_archive.html#11346032612497... Update- December 1, 2005 So I've been writing on my lunch hour at work. I close my door (mmm, dooooorrrrr...) and write for an hour. So far, I'm averaging about 1000 words for that hour, so it's going pretty well. I just slugged in some stuff I wrote during three lunches this week, and worked on the document a little more. Here's where it is: <p> Peru: Pages, 31 (+8); words, 7199 (+2126)<p> Document: Pages, 223; words, 59,205.http://www.cadence90.com/blogs/treklog.html/2005_11_27_treklog_archive.html#11334805599621... |
