JBoss Remoting Committed to JBoss HEAD - February 19, 2003

JBoss Remoting I commited the JBoss remoting code to HEAD tonight.  There is some more work that needs to take place after the refactoring now to get it fully tested - since some packages have moved around a bit.  Hopefully, Tom and I can have this fully stabilized in the next couple of weeks so we can do some heavy load and stress testing on it and work out all the kinks.

Chiara - you're right, you lost me. - February 15, 2003

I'm totally baffled, you seem lost.  Seriously, you might have emotional problems. Take a break.

When to Refactor - February 14, 2003

Refactoring is a very important design and development criteria to me.  One of the most critical things I've learned over the years, and apply almost religously today.  Often, there's debate about "when to refactor"  I let others debate the "why refactor" - that's just a waste of time to me. Refactoring in my opinion should be done continously.  I like to call that "continous refactoring" - using a similar concept to "continuous integration".  Refactoring should be done.

Non-compliant VoiceXML - February 14, 2003

Speech-based Biometrics In this Dr. Dobb's Journal article, Moshe Yudkowsky talks about Biometric Verification using Speech technology.  This subject is very cool.  Our company offers the same thing, using SpeechWorks technology called SpeechSecure.  However, unlike BeVocal, who Moshe uses as his reference in the article, we do VoiceXML-based speech biometrics in a way that is compliant to the standard.  I admit, BeVocal is a competitor.  They are a consumer..

Microsoft SALT vs. W3C VoiceXML - February 13, 2003

Microsoft vs. the W3C The big debate in the Speech Industry these days is Microsoft's SALT specification against the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) VoiceXML standard.  Dr. Jim Larson, Intel standards guru and Co-Chair of the W3C Voice Browser Working Group (VGWG), last week at the TVUI conference made a statement in his presentation that the SALT vs. VXML debate was over.  I tend to agree.  However, if Microsoft has anything to do with it -- as was suggested by the...

How far Java has come - February 12, 2003

I'm aggravated with Sun Microsystems OK, so I'm a little more pissed today at Sun. After talking today with Coty Rosenblath about how far we've come since the JDK 1.0.2 days -- and it's been a long way -- we started talking about how Sun has screwed up a lot of fairly good products in its destructive path to J2EE.  Kiva (via Sun-Netscape Alliance). Forte. NetDynamics.  What value has Sun created from all these product acquisitions  Maybe they're smart - and I'm clueless....

J2EE vs. .NET Smackdown - February 12, 2003

Cedric's report on the J2EE vs. .NET Smackdown from Nov. 2002.  Interesting to note the Microsoft comment about JBoss.  I recently heard a rumor that Microsoft's top 3 competitors to .NET: Linux IBM JBoss WOW.  No mention of Sun or J2EE.

(Untitled) - February 11, 2003

OK, today is the first day of the rest of my blogs life.  It's going to be a long ride.  JBOSS Remoting I'm currently working on refactoring some of the JBoss remoting layer into using a more generalized framework. This framework will allow the different subsystems (EJB, JMX, etc.) to use a generalized remote invocation layer.  This will plug in nicely to Bill Burke's AOP work. The main focus on the JBOSSR code is to allow the following main features: Separation of...
