AdactioThe online journal of Jeremy Keith, an Irish web developer living and working in Brighton, England.Alasgone- May 31, 2008 This is the second briefest visit I&8217;ve ever paid to Seattle. I arrived last night and I&8217;ll be leaving in just a couple of hours to head for home. The briefest visit I&8217;ve ever paid to Seattle was just over a week ago. That lasted just long enough for me to grab a few hour&8217;s sleep in a hotel near the airport in room 404, no less before heading north to Anchorage, Alaska. In the following week I saw plenty of sights. I certainly had no lack of daylight in which to see them..http://adactio.com/journal/1474 Icebound- May 21, 2008 Three years ago, Jessica and I went on a cruise through Alaska&8217;s Inside Passage. Now we&8217;re going back. This time we&8217;re going to Prince William Sound to see some glaciers &8230;y&8217;know, before they&8217;re all gone. I&8217;ll be hastening the glacial melting by flying across the Atlantic to Seattle before heading onto Anchorage to start the four-day excursion out on the water. After that, the plan is to spend a little time in Denali. I expect to be completely incommunicado...http://adactio.com/journal/1473 You are iPlayer- May 20, 2008 Now that the BBC iPlayer has been sensibly implemented in Flash, rather than as a proprietary Windows-only app, it turns out to be quite useful. Should I ever miss an episode of Doctor Who or, God forbid, University Challenge, I can catch up at my leisure. But there are two major problems with the iPlayer: It is only available in the UK,a condition imposed by the licence fee system and enforced with IP sniffing. Programmes are available for seven days. Then they&8217;re gone. Both of these.http://adactio.com/journal/1472 Great escaping- May 17, 2008 For the third year in a row, Brighton is attempting its own little version of SXSW called The Great Escape. Over the course of three days every venue in town is packed with bands plying their trade in the hope of being spotted by a passing talent scout. I purchased a three-day pass online. I made the mistake of selecting the Buy using PayPal option from Music Glue, the incompetent muppets who were briefly in charge of the ticket-purchasing process (TicketWeb appear to have taken that crown...http://adactio.com/journal/1471 |
