The Parenting WeblogParenting, Family, and Child HealthThe Big One Zero- April 30, 2008 bymanu Today our daughter is Ten! Double digits! For us, the phrase &39;our daughter&39; means more than just my husband and I - it includes her birthparents. Our daughter was adopted and we have a fairly open adoption. I&39;m not going to hash all that out here, there have been ups and downs, good and bad points. However it was the best plan for the situation and for our child - and we are all here for the long haul. Her needs come first. As I wrote about before with the Wii entry, mine.http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/the_big_one_zero.php Wii-ache- April 27, 2008 First right off the bat - it&39;s cool to really want to play with your kid&39;s birthday gift a lot, right I mean, that&39;s nothing bad. She can still play, she&39;s just gotta wait her turn. The playground works that way, sharing is good. It&39;s fair for us to have some fun too. Ahh crap, that&39;s not gonna fly is it Our birthday gift to our daughter was a Wii. We got family to give her games, extra controllers and other stuff for it. She got it a few days early because family was...http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/wiiache.php Chiming in on Wind Chimes- April 25, 2008 John-Morgan When it comes to the safety of our children, we can&39;t predict what activities are going to turn in to potential nightmares. Sure, we can make an educated guess, like it&39;s probably fair to say letting a 5 year old drive a 34 ton truck alone is probably not the safest activity you could choose. Or how about sitting on a skateboard riding down a long, steep driveway Without helmets Yeah, I&39;m guilty as charged. Last weekend we went to Aunt Cheryl&39;s house to have dinner...http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/chiming_in_on_wind_chimes.php Someone's only child- April 25, 2008 Yesterday I was driving home after some errands when I saw numerous police vehicles, lanes blocked and all sorts of activity. I thought for sure it was an major accident or a huge drug bust as I sat there stalled in traffic. One driver who was stuck in traffic actually got out and yelled at the cop for blocking the lanes. The cop quickly and strongly dismissed him. That peaked my interest even more what the hubbub was about. Soon after I saw the hearse, a funeral perhaps but this was a lot...http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/someones_only_child.php Arms & Legs- April 24, 2008 This morning I saw the coltish long legs of a pre-teen rolling out of her bed this morning. At almost ten, she&39;s growing longer and more lanky. It&39;s like someone stretched her out. She&39;s still on the short side but she is more legs than anything now it seems. She put on a shirt that should have been too big. It was baggy but it fit fine on the arms and length. She put on shorts that should have been long bermuda shorts. They were almost as small in the waist as the waist-adjustable...http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/arms_legs.php List of life- April 22, 2008 decor8 Have you ever thought about what experiences you want your children to have in life Not just the small things or the values you impart, but what events, places and activities do you want them to observe Where, what and how What of those do you want to experience with them The train trip is what spurred my thinking about this. The trip felt like one of those things you&39;d mark off your list of things you want to do. That make me thing what else specifically do I want my daughter to..http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/list_of_life.php How hard is too hard How easy is too easy- April 20, 2008 We are here, three hours away from home at this soccer tournament. Yesterday was brutal and they just got hammered, 8-1 and 5-1. UGH. This soccer program is good but $500 a year is a lot for soccer and that doesn&39;t cover the travel. This year we&39;ve been one a ton of day trips and two weekend trips. It adds up when you start looking at gas, hotel, food and supplies. Then add in the time involved with two 90 minute practices a week that never seem to end right on time. However my...http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/how_hard_is_too_hard_how_easy_is_too_easy.php Train trip- April 18, 2008 The train was an hour late and we saw muskrats in dirty water collection on the other side of the tracks. I feared this was a harbinger of a bad trip. The seats for roomy and the table was very handy for activities. We sat at a table with a very interesting navy doctor who had her foot in a cast. She&39;d had a diverse life before being a doctor and it was interesting to talk to her. The kids were happy to color and play cards - something that would have been almost impossible in a car, or...http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/train_trip.php All aboard- April 17, 2008 Savannah Grandfather Trains have been always been a part of Americana. Whether it be the historical stories of heading westward, the sad history of their formation or the legions of movies featuring trains. As generations continue, the train has really gone by the wayside in terms of a transportation option except for commuters in urban areas. It no longer really has much appeal to this generation now in its real form. We have an Amtrak station here and I&39;ve always thought about hopping.http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/all_aboard.php Monkey Joe's- April 15, 2008 Oh happiness, your name is Monkey Joe&39;s. We&39;ve had several of those inflatables bounce play centers in the area over the past few years. Good fun, the kids wear themselves out jumping, hurling themselves around and sliding down. We had Hayley&39;s seventh birthday party at one as well. However they&39;ve always just been in odd locations like extra office spaces, out of the way. One of my college roommates came to town with her son who wanted to visit the newly opened Monkey Joe&39;s..http://www.parenting-weblog.com/50226711/monkey_joes.php |
