float, padding, margins, wrappers, %0px1.2em!11!! oh my! - September 17, 2008

I'm going crazy trying to adjust my blog template. It seems that when I change the browser window size, the body, sidebar, and header all move independently. If I make the window wider, the right edges of the sidebar and header do not align. If I make the window less wide, the whole sidebar crunches into body text (fine) and eventually gets kicked off the side by the body (not fine). Ideally, I'd like them all to line up, movescale together side-to-side, and not get kicked around. I know this...

Internet Fax Service - September 16, 2008

I need to send faxes without a land line. Googling "Internet Fax" produces a pile of results, but it's hard to tell the skeezy from the cheap. I'm looking for the latter. I have DSL, a scanner and a PC running XP. I don't have a phone line. I want to scan a document, fax it via the internet to a telephone number, and have it be easy enough that Mrs. Phillips can do it about a dozen times a week. Her PC skills are average. I'm not looking for fax software that requires a fax modem and a...

Anyone know where I can find a restoration status map for Comcast after Ike I'm looking for any info from Comcast andor AT&T about when they expect internet access to be restored, and in what order, in the Houston area. I have a bunch of employees with laptops and power but no access to their work, which is stored on a server in Dallas. I'm wondering whether to just bring them up here to our Austin offices. Netstat natterings. - September 16, 2008

Can someone help me interpret these netstat results from an XP computer When I run netstat on my computer I get these results when the only webpage I have open is metafilter. I understand that some of those IP address come along with metafilter but what I am wondering about are all the the local host entries. The only program I have running is firefox, although I understand that there are other programs running in the background, I still wonder why there are so many local host entries. If...

How to extend a wifi network at home. - September 16, 2008

Help extending a wireless network I have a Time Capsule acting as my primary wifi base station. It's in the living room, attached to the only DSL line in the house. It has a great signal all over the house...except of course in my office, in the back room. Any good ideas how to extend the network back there A few more details inside. The walls are thick plaster, so I think they're basically blocking the signal, because it's not physically that far from the Time Capsule to the room in question...

I can't make decisions! - September 15, 2008

Should I buy a computer today (the last day of the apple promotion) andor is my landlord required to provide me with a stable wifi signal if it is included in the lease I have two interconnected questions for the hive mind. 1. I recently moved into a new studio apartment. This apartment is a cottage in the backyard of the landlord's house. Free wifi was advertised in the craigslist listing of the apartment and was included in the lease. However, once I moved in I discovered that the connection.

How to watch shows together - September 15, 2008

How can my friends and I, all in different time zones, watch TV together during its FIRST airing We're all tech savvy, but not nocturnal. Help us! My friends and I are excited about some new TV series coming out this fall and would like to watch them as a group, connected via Skype to talk about the shows. However, we are all across the country, PST to EST. By the time the show is airing PST it's been 3 hours since it started EST; by the time a 9 p.m. 1 hour show is over it's only 10 p.m....

WiFi to router, but no further - September 10, 2008

My daughter has an iBook G4, running OSX 10.5 (Leopard). She's in Argentina, and having issues with the wireless connection. I need a little MetaFilter brain power: She can connect to the router in her apartment (she rents a room), and she can access 192.168.1.1, and gets router login prompt. But she can't get out to the Internet. She put OpenDNS IP addresses in the DNS entries for the wireless card. She has limited control over the hardware in her apartment. It appears to be a Dlink DWL 800.
