Higher Education Act passes House - March 31, 2006

TheThe Chronicle of Higher Education has a good article on the House's efforts to renew the Higher Education Act. McKeon acknowledged that he had to compromise on several controversial provisions to obtain passage. The compromise impacted provisions designed to limit or control tuition increases, regulate how credits are transferred among institutions and allow states to accredit higher-education institutions.

USC has put a business school instructor on leave after his arrest on fraud charges. According to court documents, the instructor recruited students to work on his real estate scheme "to sell investments through a real estate company he ran, which he said had the rights to valuable property in Chicago and Las Vegas." Inside Higher Ed. The students became suspicious after the promised payouts on their and family member's investments were not received from the instructor.

Adware Marketers Settle Class Lawsuit - March 22, 2006

Direct Revenue LLC and The Best Offers Network LLC agreed to change their business practices and obtain consumers' prior express consent for the downloading of adware programs. Direct Revenue also agreed to provide an easy mechanism to remove its software after download. Princeton Police do an about face on Facebook - March 15, 2006

A week after acknowledging that facebook.com was an "effective tool" for investigations, the Princeton Department of Public Safety has agreed to only use the site as a "supplementary source for investigations" but will not "scour" the site for parties or other activities. Officers are also prohibited from identifying themselves as students in their Facebook accounts.The Daily Princetonian

Colleges Expand Scholarship Eligibility - March 14, 2006

The New York Times reports on recent activity by colleges and universities to allow nonminorities and men to access fellowships, scholarships and other programs previously set aside for minorities and women. This is on the heels of last month's consent decree between Southern Illinois University and the Department of Justice opening graduate fellowships at SIU to nonminorities and men.

High Court Affirms Solomon Amendment - March 13, 2006

The United States Supreme Court rejected arguments from a coalition of law schools that colleges and universities have a First Amendment right to prevent recruiters from coming on campus when the recruiting organization fails to adhere to the antidiscrimination policies of the educational institution. High Schools Withhold Class Ranking - March 13, 2006

Here is an interesting NY Times article about High Schools that are withholding class rank data in order to help their very good (but not the best) students get in to college. "Now nearly 40% of all high schools have either stopped ranking their students or have ceased giving that information to colleges."
