Sorry, Ron Paul: Why Fox Should Limit Debate - January 3, 2008

With wide-open races for both parties' presidential nominations, the extent to which TV networks affect the outcome by bestowing attention upon, or withholding it from, candidates has been a latent theme of this primary season. Now it's front and center thanks to Fox News, which is drawing howls for declining to invite two low-polling Republicans, Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter, to an upcoming debate in New Hampshire. Predictably, Fox is getting accused (mostly by Paul's wild-eyed supporters) of.

The Most-Traded Stocks of the Year - January 3, 2008

Here's an interesting exercise: compare this table, of the largest US companies by market capitalization, to this table, of the top stocks in 2007 by dollars traded. For instance, more money changed hands trading Apple shares than trading Exxon Mobil shares, despite the fact that Exxon Mobil is three times the size of Apple. Similarly, Goldman Sachs beat out Citigroup in trading volume despite having a significantly smaller market cap. And just look at Research in Motion: a market cap of just...

Twitter's business model - January 2, 2008

When I was in college, professors used to ask questions that are much harder than the question Allen Stern asks in this piece. The NY Times crossword puzzle is harder. Geez, installing a new hard disk in a MacBook is harder, and as I've found out that's pretty easy. Okay what is Twitter's business model They give away access to the API only to find that add-on devs have a business model selling Twitter clients while Twitter itself is left sucking air. And this is some kind of problem We...

The three business models that make Twitter a billion-dollar business in 12-24 months. - January 2, 2008

Allen wrote a blog post today about Twitter focusing on a business model. Allen, my friend, you're thinking small. Get out of Brooklyn and spend more time in the Valley. Business models!!! The business model comes AFTER you get to scale. When Twitter gets to scale here are the very obvious, and wildly lucrative, business models:1. In feed advertising Imagine if every 10th, 20th, or 100th tweet was an advertisement. Would that be so horrible No, not at all. "your free Twitter account is brought..

The Best Equity is Sweat Equity - January 2, 2008

Sweat Equity is the best equity! The Rules of Success As MicroSolutions became more and more successful, and as I paid attention to the common traits of businesses that I saw succeed and those I saw fail, I came to realize that there are "Rules of Success" that I saw in companies that excelled. Where companies failed to follow those rules, inevitably, they failed. I found myself checking with "My Rules" before I made decisions. When I traded stocks or considered investments in..

What's Next on the Web: a ReadWriteWeb Toolkit for 2008 - January 2, 2008

Some people say that the bubble's going to take a downturn in the next year or two - that huge numbers of copycat startups are going to shut down, people are going to be out of work and Web 2.0 cheerleaders are going to eat their (our) words. While startup churn is inevitable in any industry (thank goodness we're not restaurant founders!) I think this forecast is selling the future short. There are some big trends I'm really excited about for the web in 2008. Whatever happens to the...

On Scraping the Screens for Making the Feeds - January 1, 2008

I wrote this post on ReadWriteWeb for Marshallk.com originally as it had been such a long time since I last posted here, but I showed the screencast I made for it to Richard MacManus at ReadWriteWeb and he asked me to post it there instead. I was happy to do so, but do want ...Tags: readwriteweb post screencast showed posted

The Glory, Bliss and How-to of Screen Scraping for RSS - January 1, 2008

Wired has an awesome top story today on the world of startups utilizing scraped data from big companies to offer new layers of value for their own users. It's a roughly objective piece that I highly recommend reading but it was also inspiration for me to finally record a screencast on the subject (see below). I love RSS, probably more than anything on the web. If you're not familiar with the concept, see my very old definition of RSS and my almost-as-old post on teaching people about...

Uncovering Material Information at Merrill Lynch - January 1, 2008

It's the bottomless write-downs! According to William Tanona of Goldman Sachs, the write-downs we've already seen at Citigroup and Merrill Lynch aren't even close to being final. Indeed, he reckons that both banks will see 11-figure write-downs in the fourth quarter alone, over and above what they've already taken. Especially in the case of Merrill Lynch, this is very serious money: the $11.5 billion write-down that Tanona now expects in Q4 is equivalent to 37% of the bank's book value, and is..
