Ex-Microsoft domain buyer's restitution in dispute - July 1, 2008

The sentencing date for Carolyn Gudmundson, the former Microsoft domain buyer who earlier this year pleaded guilty to stealing money from the company, has been delayed for a third time, to July 18. The assistant U.S. attorney on the case and Gudmundson's lawyer both say they haven't yet been able to come to an agreement on the amount of restitution Gudmundson owes.

Microsoft confirms Powerset search deal - July 1, 2008

Microsoft confirmed today that it has reached a deal to buy Powerset, a San Francisco-based search-technology company. The companies aren't disclosing financial terms. VentureBeat reported that the purchase price would be more than $100 million when it broke the news last week.

Bill Gates as McCain's VP Don't count on it - July 1, 2008

Politico.com this morning put Bill Gates on its speculative list of longshot vice-presidential possibilities, quoting anonymous Republican and Democratic operatives saying he would be Republican candidate John McCain's "dream running mate." The site added: "Gates could position McCain as a trusted voice on the economy and his multi-billion dollar commitment to charitable giving could soften up the campaign's image." One problem: It's not going to happen.
