Memorial Day & Washington Memorials - May 31, 2004

I&39;ve been in Washington for the weekend, where the new World War II Memorial was dedicated this weekend by President Bush, what seemed like hundreds of thousands of World War II veterans and even more non-veterans. After all the talk &40;it&39;s taken more than 20 years to plan&41;, I had to go see it for myself.

MTV should be embarrassed - May 29, 2004

MTV sells itself as young and hipper than hip. Actually they've used hardware and software unavailable until now to raise the art of selling the Lowest Common Denominator to a new high. Practically overnight, they poll their viewers and change their broadcasts. Want 24 hours of Step 'N Fetchit NO...

The Truth Is Out There — Koolhaas in Seattle - May 28, 2004

You expect the architecture critics to rave about Rem Koolhaas's new Seattle Library. I'm interested in what others think too. I liked Koolhaas's IIT Building (and hated the Congrexpo in Eurolille), so I was interested to see that both David Sucher (City Comforts) and a guest have commented on the...

Designing A Neighborhood For The Creative Class In A Week - May 26, 2004

From CoolTown Studios:...a place must be created that captures the imagination of the young, educated 'creative class'. No longer seduced by office parks with out-dated marble lobbies, these workers are attracted to loft living and downtown intensity that reflects their self-image as 'worker-as-artist'.

"In Which It Comes To Our Attention That Many British Architects Are Schmucks" - May 26, 2004

How have the British architects dealt with all this ... When I was in London a few years after the carbuncle speech, I noticed that whenever Prince Charles would make a comment about architecture, there would be an unflattering article about his paramour Camilla the next day on the cover of one of the national British newspapers. Schmucks.

Coding - May 25, 2004

Very few architects understand the type of coding that UK Deputy Prime Minister Prescott is talking about. We, architects, simply think we're supposed to design everything. That's what Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Confusier did. After 50 years of Modernism, even Traditional and Classical architects think that way. When you...

My Architect Louis Icon - May 24, 2004

New York journalism legend Kurt Andersen has a weekly arts program on National Public Radio (NPR) called Studio 360. Each week he has a different theme and a new co-host. This week's co-host was Nathaniel Kahn, the illegitimate son of the great Modern architect Louis I. Kahn and the director...

Quote of the Day - May 21, 2004

"The architectural elite in this country has abdicated its position of leadership. It is concerned only in justifying itself to itself." Elizabeth PlaterZyberk

The Pleasures of City Life - May 18, 2004

When there's a week-long cold snap with lots of slush on the ground, I walk around the Met and pass by Titian and the Temple of Dendur as I exercise: I usually go up the grand stairs designed by McKim, Mead & White, through the European paintings gallery, and down the Louis Sullivan stairway in the American Wing. The food is good, and I get to pass through my favorite room in New York on the way there.
